San Francisco Font Family is an sans-serif typeface. Apple Inc designed San Francisco as a neo-grotesque sans-serif typeface in November 2014. Developers were first given access to it on 18 November 2014. It’s the first typeface they’ve developed in over 20 years – in the style of Helvetica as well as DIN.
San Francisco Typeface comes in three main variations for use by Apple products and services: SF for macOS, iOS and iPadOS; SF Compact for watchOS; and SF Mono for Terminal console and Xcode applications (among others). Other variations may also be available internally by Apple.
The primary difference lies in the letters’ sides which feature round shapes like an “O” or “E”, while in SF Compact these edges remain flat to allow more even character placement and ease reading at smaller sizes. This distinction becomes especially evident on Apple Watch devices.
